The Value of Intelligent Competition and Crowdsourcing

All challenges have solutions – it’s just a matter of finding them.  Traditional R&D can be effective, but it can be expensive and there’s no guarantee that at the end of the process you’ll have the solution you need.  A well-developed competition can captivate the human imagination.  The lever of competition can motivate and inspire people to generate new solutions to your challenge, while sparking interest from the general public that traditional R&D simply cannot match.

Human history is full of examples of prizes and awards driving innovative solutions the problems that seemed insurmountable.  The following are just a few examples of how some visionary people and organizations harnessed the full power of crowd sourcing and human ingenuity to not only find solutions problems previously thought to be insurmountable, but also to drive awareness, motivate and mobilize the masses.

Breakthrough Innovation

Two centuries before Lindberg, the Longitude Prize was offered by the British government to develop an accurate way to measure longitude out to sea. The winning solution came from an unlikely source – a local clockmaker – but his innovation remained the standard of navigation at sea until the invention of the GPS.

More recently, the Ansari X PRIZE to create a vehicle that could travel to an altitude of 100km twice in two weeks was won by an airplane developer named Burt Rutan, and has since resulted in the creation of a private spaceflight industry.
